Vijay Singh may be grabbing the headlines, but Charley Hoffman is moving up the PGA Tour’s money list.

On the strength of a 6-under par 67-69-71-71–278 at the Boston TPC  in the Duetsche Bank Championship, Hoffman is now is among the top-70 in the Fed-Ex Cup points. He has made 11 cuts in his past 12 events, including two top-40 finishes in the PGA season-ending playoff events.

Earlier in the seaon, Hoffman hit a wall, getting cut nine times in 11 events from early February to mid-May.

Hoffman, who wears Straight Down Clothing Co, gear while competing on the PGA Tour, has three top-10 finishes in 2008.

Hoffman finished tied for 33rd in the Deutsche Bank Championship that concluded Monday. His final round included a double bogey, a bogey and three birdies. Hoffman message aids Lunde.

Last weekend’s Nationwide Tour victor Bill Lunde got a boost before he teed off Sunday morning on his final round in Columbus, Ohio.

PGA Tour reporters wrote Tuesday that fellow UNLV graduate Charley Hoffman passed along the encouragement.

Clinging to a one-shot lead entering Sunday’s final round of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, Lunde received inspiration via a text message from his old friend.

“Get it done” was the message sent by the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler champion, Lunde told reporters.

Lunde took it from there — winning his first Nationwide Tour event in his 66th start. He improved 21 spots on the money list to No. 7. Lunde and Hoffman are graduates of UNLV and both live there.

Hoffman, who has a clothing endorsement contract with Straight Down Clothing Co., also has a house in San Diego. Hoffman has three top-10 finishes this year, making 11 cuts in 21 events. He has earned $713,000 on the PGA Tour this season.

Another top-10 finish

Hoffman slips in final round of Nelson championship.

A slow start on Sunday proved deadly for hopes that Charley Hoffman may have harbored in the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

In a four-way tie for second place at the start of the day, Hoffman struggled early with two bogeys and a double bogey over his first five holes.

He righted the ship at that point, managing one birdie and another bogey in his round for a 4-over par 74.
Still, Hoffman’s 69-68-68-74—279 was good for a tie for seventh place money with six other players at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas.

The tournament, won by Adam Scott in a playoff, was Hoffman’s second straight top-10 finish on the PGA Tour. The week was worth $180,000 to Hoffman, who has a clothing endorsement contract with Straight Down Clothing Co.

Hoffman’s strong week was based on a good effort with the putter, averaging less than 28 putts per round.
On Sunday, however, he needed 35 putts for the round.

Hoffman hangs tough

In Texas, he is one of four tied for second place after three rounds.

Adam Scott may be in the driver’s seat Sunday in Irving, Texas, but one face he is seeing close up in his rear view mirror is Charley Hoffman.

Hoffman is one of four PGA Tour players tied for second place going into Sunday’s final round of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

Scott and Hoffman are the only players in the field to record all three rounds in the 60s.

Hoffman, who has a clothing endorsement contract with Straight Down Clothing Co., got a little push on his final hole on Saturday, using a rescue club to putt from off the green to make birdie on the par-4 hole.

He carded four birdies at the TPC Four Seasons Resort Saturday along with back-to-back bogeys early in the round for a 2-under par 68.

His 69-68-68—205 is three back of Scott, who posted his second straight 67 in the $5.4 million tournament.

Hoffman, who started Saturday in fifth place, needed only 22 putts in the third round. He is ranking in the top-5 in total putts and putts in greens in regulation this week.

Hoffman is coming off a tie for 6th place in the Shell Houston Open, held the first week in April.

He also has an 8th place tie as the defending champion in January’s Chrysler Bob Hope Classic.

Between his Palm Springs outing and the Shell event, he missed the cut in six of the seven events he played in.

While Hoffman ranks third on the tour this season in greens in regulation percentage, he struggled finding the putting surface on Saturday, getting home only 36 percent of the time.

Hoffman hangs near top in Texas

Two rounds in the 60s has pro two shots off the pace.

Charley Hoffman logged his second round in the 60s Friday in the EDS Byron Nelson Classic.

The 69-68—137 puts Hoffman in a five-way tie for fifth place as the PGA Tour players head into the weekend.

Hoffman, who has a clothing endorsement deal with Straight Down Clothing Co, started his second round at the TPC Four Seasons Resort course tied for 12th place in the $6.4 million tournament.

Through 36 holes at Irving, Texas he is three under par and two shots back of leader Adam Scott.

On Friday, Hoffman carded five birdies but that was tempered with three bogeys. The winner of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 2007 needed 28 putts in Thursday’s round and shaved that number to 26 on Friday.
